It’s saying damn, euro spec bumpers aren’t gonna be cheap, but they’re gonna be so worth it.

DIVING BOARDS

No fucking way.
Edit:. I mean, it’s probably the cheapest halfway decent E3 I’ll ever come across, but it’s an automatic and needs a shitload of work. On the other hand, the rust could be worse, and it’s a pre-smog 3.0.

No, that’s the devil on my other shoulder. As a former and likely future E28 owner, diving boards don’t bother me as much as the should. Still, if I managed to get this, job one is bumper removal.

If only it were so simple! Money is tight, and I have no storage. Still trying to find a way though.

Less than $1500.

If it were ugly I wouldn’t be beating myself up over it! That and my dad had one when I was a kid, and I loved it.

I will say this, I helped a friend strip down a ‘71 E9 and OH MY GOD do these things hide rust. Whatever rust you can see is 1/5th the rust happening on the car. These things are absolutely evil that way.

Who stuck a metal railroad tie to the front end? :)
I saw something similar at a local car auction late last year. Didn’t look to have rust issues, but I don’t think it had been on the road in eons. It did have a ton of paperwork, and had been in the area for maybe 40 years:
I suspect it brought pocket change.

Yes they are, though the coupes are worse than the sedans. This one has a little beneath trim and a spot on the left C-pillar, but I’ve seen worse drivers and the floors & chassis are good as far as I’ve seen. It’s been a CA car its whole life and was well loved up until the previous (original) owner’s health declined a couple of years ago, so it’s got that going for it.

The US government, trying to handicap it against its domestic competition. It’s a conspiracy, I tell you!
Argh, that’s the same color my dad’s ‘72 was!! That’s exactly what I want, it looks pretty clean. I don’t like the white paint or automatic in this one, but at least it’s pre-smog 3.0.

I like the gigantic MB bumpers the best, park benches.
I think the blue car was an automatic. It was probably redeemable, but would have been a labor of love. I think it was a 71. I seem to recall it had been sold new in Hawaii, and came here in the mid 70s. I remember it had a pile of old receipts, and the owner back in the late 70s lived in Medina (so they had money). If it could have been bought for 1K or something, maybe worth it to the right person.

I like them too, in their own way. They’re certainly more functional than the Euro parts, but I’d say as big afterthought bumpers go, MBZ did it a little better. The W116 though, that’s a bit much. In this car’s case, they completely ruin the lines.
I can get past the automatic, that’s easy enough to swap eventually, but this car has extensive other needs. I could probably get it for $1000.

I was kind of joking :) The big MB bumpers are hilarious in their size, especially the double bumpered W116. The later W114/115 also look really heavy with it. Luckily by the time W126 came around, they made it look more integrated.
You should look up here in the PNW, lots of odd cars around, and they might not be as sun baked as in CA. Wish I would have told you about the auction car when it took place. It probably brought very little money, I bet well under 1K.

I routinely search for these on SearchTempest with a pretty wide range, some have popped up there. I really shouldn’t be searching for cars because I can’t afford another and already have projects, but this one fell in my lap. They’re only getting more expensive and harder to find, most drivers with needs are $4-5k at least.

Stunning. I’ve long dreamed of an old 5er, but mostly thought about the E28. This, however, is gorgeous.

Indeed. My dad had a ‘72 when I was a kid, I cried when he sold it and have wanted my own ever since. I’ve had two E28s, and these are why I love them too. That sharknose style and airy greenhouse is just so, so good.
